![]() (You can read current Music Notes from Dwayne White in the MCC Newsletter - Click and print!) A few months ago, I started a series titled The Purpose of Music in the Church. Throughout my 17 years as a worship leader and music director, Ive spent quite a bit of time researching the role that music plays in the church. With more than 800 references to music in the Bible, it became apparent to me that music was something dear to the heart of God. |

In case you missed the first two installments, one purpose of
music in the church is
. To Praise and Worship
God
![]() All through the scriptures, we are encouraged to Praise the Lord and Sing unto the Lord. The music portions of our service, or what I call the Praise and Worship time, gives us an opportunity to do exactly what the scriptures have encouraged us to do. I also suggested that we not limit our musical praise just to the church service spend time singing and praising God in your personal devotions, in your car or wherever you may be. And last time, I shared that music is a great way To Teach Gods Word Colossians 3:16 says Let the Word of Christ richly dwell within you " I cant think of anything more important to memorize or just remind ourselves about than Gods Word. I think you would be surprised at how many songs we sing on Sunday that are taken directly from scripture. Remember that as you worship through music, you are singing Gods Word and you are allowing that message to dwell within you. So, sing, sing your hearts out to God. A third purpose of music in the church is . . . To Release Gods Power Many times throughout scripture, we see Gods power released through music. In Acts 16 when Paul and Silas were in jail, they were praying and singing hymns of praise to God and suddenly there came a great earthquake Coincidence? I dont think so Gods power was released in their singing. In II Chronicles 20, three armies came to make war against Jehoshaphat. After prayer and seeking the Lord, he sent the SINGERS out ahead of the army. And when they began singing and praising, the Lord set ambushes against the [enemy] who had come against Judah; so they were routed. Now I dont expect earthquakes or armies to be defeated during our Sunday worship, but it is not uncommon to experience physical and emotional healings, deliverances, salvations and so forth as we sing and worship God. Every Sunday those involved in the service meet for prayer. One of the things we pray for is an anointing from the Holy Spirit to be released through the music and through the Word so peoples lives are changed. As the music director, I want to present the best sounding music every week, but my utmost desire as a worship leader is that Gods power is released through our music and worship
